The Legacy Campaign
Doc was 77 in 1999 when he said to the Board of Trustees of
the Doc Hurley Scholarship Foundation, "You know I'm going
to want to retire in a few years. What's going to happen to
all these young people?" The establishment of this program will ensure
that Doc's legacy of commitment to youth, education and community
continues far into the future. With the help of The
Phoenix Companies, Inc. an endowment was established with a
goal of 3 million dollars. To date the legacy campaign
has generated approximately 2.5 million in donations and
pledges.
Beginning
in June of 2001, two Doc Hurley Legacy Scholars were awarded four-year
scholarships of $2,500 each and this year 2 more students
were added to the Doc Hurley Legacy program. Ultimately, the Foundation envisions
having a minimum of fifteen Doc Hurley Scholars each year.
