Doc Hurley Scholars

      The Doc Hurley Legacy Scholar
The Doc Hurley Legacy Scholar program is a new initiative of The Doc Hurley Scholarship Foundation, which began with the 2000 - 2001 academic year. This program is separate from and in addition to the traditional "book scholarships" which have been awarded for the past 30 years and which will continue as a separate program, funded by our annual fund drive.

      A Unique Approach
The Doc Hurley Legacy Scholar program is designed to embody the founder's intense commitment to higher education and community involvement. It is a unique, full-service educational assistance program that includes long-term mentoring and employment relationships with outstanding business and community leaders.

      Financial Aid
The Doc Hurley Legacy Scholar will receive $2,500 a year for four years if certain academic and community requirements are met each year.

The Doc Hurley Legacy Scholar program is designed to provide the aid to lessen the financial burden of the students and their families. Many other scholarships simply reduce the overall dollar amount that the student will receive from the university or the government as part of a total financial aid package. In determining what financial help a student will need, most schools determine what government and other scholarship assistance the student will receive, how much the student and his or her family can contribute ( "self-help" ), and then determine how much the school will provide.

      Mentoring
Each DHLS will be expected to participate in a mentorship program. This mentorship program is designed to assist the recipient in successfully acquiring a college degree while developing community and professional resources for future career opportunities. Each DHLS will receive a mentor through the Foundation's Board of Trustees. the mentor will serve as a role model, personal coach, special friend and resource. His or her mission will be to guide their respective student over four years, helping them to maintain focus on their educational and career goals and to utilize the resources the Doc Hurley organization has created.

      Community Development
In the spirit of Doc Hurley's life-long commitment to the Hartford community, the DHLS must volunteer for community service which meets the approval of their mentor. The recipient is encouraged to complete a minimum of fifteen hours of volunteer work each year.

      Employment Opportunities
The recipient will be encouraged to identify their employment interests to their mentor. The mentor will assist the recipient in looking for summer employment and a potential part-time position during the academic year, if desired. The mentor, using the resources of the Board of Trustees, will assist the student with their job search upon graduation.
